Along with more than 100 other nations, India voted in favor of a public vote on the draught resolution, rejecting Russia’s proposal for a secret ballot in the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on a draught resolution to condemn Moscow’s illegal annexation of four regions of Ukraine.
Russia insisted that a secret ballot be used to decide the resolution. Moscow’s desire for a secret ballot was turned down as 107 UN members, including India, voted in favor of a recorded vote. Only 13 nations voted in favor of Russia’s call for a secret ballot, and 39 others abstained.

Russia then proposed to review the choice to accept Albania’s move for a recorded vote. Despite the votes of 104 countries, including India, in favor, 16, against, and 34 abstentions, the General Assembly ultimately chose not to review the decision.
Vassily Nebenzia, the permanent representative of Russia, claimed that the general assembly president had, regrettably, played a significant part in an outrageous scam to which the UN membership had been made a party.

The general assembly’s and the UN’s overall credibility are in jeopardy due to this unprecedented falsehood. Given these facts, he continued, Russia decided to abstain from the vote.
When the US and Albania put out a draught UN Security Council resolution in September to condemn Moscow’s illegal referenda and nullify the annexation of four Ukrainian territories, India decided to abstain. After 104 countries, including India, voted against such a reconsideration, 16 voted in favor, and 34 abstained, the General Assembly chose not to.
The resolution would also urge all nations, international organizations, and United Nations competent authorities to abstain from any action or conduct that may be perceived as endorsing any changing of the Russian government’s treatment of the Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, or Zaporizhia.
The UNGA decision happened barely hours after Russian airstrikes on numerous Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, which resulted in at least 10 fatalities and up to 60 injuries nationally.
